What is a Christian?

Let’s start with a definition:
A Christian is someone who trusts Jesus Christ as their Saviour and who follows Jesus Christ as their Lord, in the company of fellow believers.

But what does this mean?

Living a good life doesn’t make a Christian. To trust Jesus as Saviour is to admit our rebellion against God and need of his forgiveness. In his great love for us, he has promised to forgive us. To make this possible, Jesus died on the cross in our place and was raised to life on the third day.

Going to church doesn’t make a Christian any more than going to Rothley Chip Shop makes one a battered cod. To follow Jesus as Lord is recognise his authority over all of life by seeking to bring it in line with Jesus’ teaching as we read it in the Bible. That means ambitions, money, relationships, politics, leisure…the whole lot! Christians fail God every day but he has given his Holy Spirit to change hearts and empower us to live his way.

Being a Christian isn’t a solitary life. We are members of God’s family and called to meet together to worship him, learn and pray, encourage and care for each other; and share the good news about Jesus with the world through both words and actions.

If you would like to discuss this further, please call me, Rob Gladstone on 0116 230 2241.
